MP phone bill $3.7 million

Author: Lee Harding 2009/11/10

Unbelievable but true. According to the Toronto Sun, the biggest tab was a $34,205 bill made by Bloc Quebecois MP Maria Mourani. She made calls from Lebanon for a month to "keep in touch."

Deepak Ohbrai, Conservative MP for Calgary East, spent $28,543 last year. Ohbrai said the high bill was due to his job as parliamentary secretary to the foreign affairs minister.

House of Commons Speaker Peter Milliken billed taxpayers just $4,308 for the year.

In 2004-05, the annual bill was only $491,024. That is less than one-seventh of the annual total now. Surely not all of this can be blamed on data fees for blackberries!
